3 Beautiful Places for Family Photos Near Rochester Hills, Michigan
(And How to Choose the Right One)
Choosing the right location can completely change the feel of your family photos.
Whether you love wide-open nature, charming downtown scenery, or modern walking trails, Rochester Hills and the surrounding area offer beautiful locations for every family's style.
As a family photographer serving Rochester Hills and Metro Detroit, these are three of my favorite places to photograph families throughout the year.
1. Stony Creek Metropark
Why I love it
Stony Creek is one of the most versatile locations in Metro Detroit.
It offers:
Open fields
Beautiful lake views
Tree-lined paths
Natural landscapes
Gorgeous sunsets
It's perfect for families who love a timeless, natural look and want plenty of room for children to explore and play.
Best season
Spring, summer and fall.
Best Time for Photos
The hour before sunset is my favorite time at Stony Creek Metropark. The warm golden light over the lake and open fields creates soft, flattering light that's perfect for family portraits.
Morning sessions are also a wonderful option for families with young children who are happiest earlier in the day.
Best for:
Families with young kids
Large families
Sunset lovers
Natural, timeless portraits
Things to Consider
Large park with plenty of walking.
A Metroparks vehicle pass or daily entry fee is required.
Can be busy on summer weekends.

2. Rochester Municipal Park
Why I love it
If you're looking for a classic park with mature trees, charming bridges, and beautiful greenery, Rochester Municipal Park is a wonderful choice.
I especially love it for:
Families with young children
Spring blossoms
Summer evenings
Fall color
The park is compact enough that we can easily move between different backgrounds without long walks.
Best Time for Photos
This park photographs beautifully in the evening when the sunlight filters through the mature trees. Because of the tree cover, it can also work well a little earlier than open locations like Stony Creek, giving us a bit more flexibility.
Spring and fall are especially beautiful here.
Best for:
Toddlers
Small children
Families who prefer shorter walks
Classic park scenery
Things to Consider
Convenient parking.
Easy to walk with young children.
Can be busy during community events.
3. Innovation Hills
Why I love it
Innovation Hills offers something a little different.
The modern bridges, paved trails, and thoughtfully designed landscape create a unique backdrop while still feeling natural.
It's a great option for families who enjoy walking together and want a fresh, contemporary look with plenty of greenery.
One of my favorite things about this location is the variety we can capture within a short distance.
Best Time for Photos
I recommend scheduling sessions during the hour before sunset when the light is softer and the park is less harshly lit. Morning sessions are another great option if you want fewer visitors and cooler temperatures during the warmer months.
Best for:
Active families
Older kids
Modern, clean backgrounds
Families who enjoy exploring together
Things to Consider
Beautiful bridges and paved paths.
Some areas can get crowded during evenings and weekends.
Great for strollers.
Which Location Is Right for Your Family?
Every family is different.
Some children love running through open fields.
Others enjoy exploring bridges and walking trails.
That's why I always help families choose the location that best fits their personalities, the season, and the type of memories they want to create.
