How to Prepare Your Kids for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session

Having your family photos taken is exciting, but as a mom, we often find ourselves asking the same question:

"What if my kids don't cooperate?"

The good news is—they don't have to be perfect.

Some of the most beautiful moments happen when children are simply being themselves. A genuine smile, an unexpected hug, a burst of laughter, or those little moments that naturally unfold are often the memories you'll treasure the most.

As a family photographer serving Metro Detroit, I've learned that a little preparation goes a long way in creating a relaxed, enjoyable experience for everyone. My goal isn't to capture perfect poses—it's to capture your family's genuine connection and the season of life you're in right now.

Here are a few simple things you can do before your session to help everyone feel more relaxed and enjoy the experience.

1. Talk About the Session in a Positive Way

Children feed off our energy.

Instead of saying:

"Please behave for pictures."

Try saying:

"We're going to spend some time together having fun, exploring, and taking beautiful family pictures."

The goal is for your child to see the session as an adventure rather than a chore.

2. Don't Put Pressure on Smiles

One of the biggest misconceptions is that everyone needs to smile perfectly at the camera.

Lifestyle photography is about connection.

Some of my favorite images are the ones where your child is laughing, cuddling with you, or simply being themselves.

3. Keep Everyone Well Rested

Whenever possible:

  • Avoid scheduling during nap time.

  • Make sure everyone has eaten.

  • Bring water and a small, mess-free snack if needed.

Happy kids are much more likely to enjoy the experience.

4. Let Me Be the One to Guide Your Children

Many parents worry when their children aren't looking at the camera.

Don't worry, that's my job.

I use prompts, games, movement, and conversation to help children relax naturally, so you can focus on enjoying the moment together.

5. Choose Comfortable Clothing

If your child is constantly adjusting itchy clothes or uncomfortable shoes, it will show.

Choose outfits that are comfortable, allow movement, and coordinate with the family without being overly matching.

If you're unsure what to wear, I'm always happy to help with outfit guidance before your session.

6. Embrace the Unexpected

Sometimes the moments you never planned become your favorite photographs.

A child picking flowers.

A spontaneous hug.

Running through the grass.

A quiet cuddle with Mom or Dad.

These are often the images families treasure the most years later.

Trust the Process

You don't have to worry about creating perfect moments.

That's what I'm here for.

My goal is to create a relaxed, enjoyable experience where your family's personality shines through naturally.

Whether your little one is full of energy or feeling a bit shy, we'll work together to create beautiful memories you'll cherish for years.
